Guajome Alliance for Responsible Development (GuARD)

Our mission is to protect and preserve the area’s semi-rural environment and quality of life.

GuARD is a neighborhood group that has been effectively advocating for traffic safety and responsible development for over two decades. We are located in the unincorporated Guajome area of North San Diego County–north of Vista, east of Oceanside, south of Highway 76 and Bonsall.

Who is GuARD?

Guajome Alliance for Responsible Development (GuARD) is a nonprofit, community-based organization. GuARD was formed to preserve and protect the character and quality of life in the Guajome region.  The Guajome area is located in the northern part of San Diego County north of Vista and east of Oceanside, and is part of the county’s Bonsall Planning Area.  We provide the community a means to address land uses and environmental issues that impact the Guajome region.  Our priorities are to minimize the adverse impact of development, maintain the area’s rural environment, ensure traffic safety, and protect Guajome Lake.

What does it mean to live in Rural San Diego County?

One conjures up the picture of rolling hillsides with habitats for wildlife, farmland, horses, nurseries, and wooded areas, all living closely and in harmony with each other.  Large parcels of land with family farms and roadside stands with fresh local foods used to be the landscape in much of San Diego County.  That is fading away with the surge of developments pressing into once rural lands.  The larger parcels of farmland are being developed and that increase in use has contributed to the wide scale gridlock all across the county.  In the Guajome Area we have been witness to this tremendous increase in the last 10 – 15 years.  With the increase in traffic our standard of living has declined, and the great loss of farmlands affects all the citizens of our county.  Land that provides healthy local foods increases everyone’s food security–and that should be of the highest priority in these times of uncertain world events.

GuARD’s activities include:

  • Monitor area planning commission meetings to ensure that new development projects properly address all environmental issues — traffic, pollution, community aesthetics, habitat, and compatibility with surrounding area.
  • Conduct meetings to inform the community of proposed development projects and review the status of current projects.
  • Distribute information on the important issues facing our area.
  • Promote the saving of farmlands of the Guajome Region for future generations.
  • Educate the public about food security and the need to save our farmlands.
  • City dwellers also need to preserve the rural areas surrounding them, that improve the quality of life by giving them a place for respite and enjoyment close to home.  Join us in saving our rural way of life.
